Favourite Childhood Reads

The Reading Nook / Friday, January 12th, 2018

I’ve always loved a good story and growing up I spent literally all my time either with my nose stuck in a book, eyes glued to the tv, ears attentively listening or simply my head in the clouds. When our littlest lady turned one, instead of other presents or money, we asked our guests to bring a copy of their favourite childhood book.

The result was a wonderful collection of diverse books with many stories we never heard of before. Therefore as a way of extending the request: I would love for you to add your favourite childhood read in the comments! Might this one day become a catalogue of inspiring reads for anyone to browse.

Below you’ll find nine of my favourite reads. As a child born in the 1980s in West-Berlin, many of my favourite stories have actually not been translated into English, therefore this is a somewhat limited but certainly not lesser loved list.

One. Heidi by Johanna Spyri
Two. Ronia, the Robber’s Daughter by Astrid Lindgren
Three. Momo by Michael Ende
Four. The Little Vampire by Angela Sommer-Bodenburg
Five. The Children of Noisy Village by Astrid Lindgren
Six. The Little Witch by Ottfried Preußler
Seven. Pippi Longstocking by Astrid Lindgren
Eight. The Neverending Story by Michael Ende
Nine. The Flying Classroom by Erich Kästner

  1. Reading is a great way of escaping from everyday stresses not only as a child but as an adult.. As a child I loved Danny the Champion of the World where the love of a child and his Father captured my imagination. To me this was my Father and I experiencing these wonderful adventures, maybe my Father having died when I was little was the cause of this much loved story.

    1. Sorry to hear that you lost your father so early in life. We love Danny the Champion of the World too. Although at this moment more us adults than the littlest lady. 🙂

  2. My favourite books of childhood were
    *Nesthäkchen von Else Ury
    *Heidi von Johanna Spyri
    *Bücher von Astrid Lindgren
Best gifts for christmas and birthday always are books.
